What should my college essay accomplish?

When sitting down to write your essay,  I find it that it helps my students to understand what the essay should accomplish in order to HELP and never remain a neutral element in your application portfolio.

  • Please remember, above all, your college essay is your voice and should act as your interview (if you don't ever have one in person), so it should certainly positively reflect your  personality.
  • An effective essay could possibly allude to your subject of interest but it will more importantly show that you are literate and erudite.
  • An effective essay could be creative and enticing, but must be grammatically correct... perfect!
  • An effective essay could use a simple or more ornate vocabulary but  must show an adept ability to use the right word choices!
  • An effective essay could impart your goals but should  give a fair assessment of your ability to write/ narrate, regardless of your thesis.
  • An effective essay could tell who you are morally but needs to impart  truthful moral characteristics & examples.
  • An effective college essay is honest, the reader is trained to read between the lines and will get the wrong idea if you embellish the truth.  Therefore, it should most definately incorporate your real life experiences and thoughts & your ability to get something concrete out of them
  • When writing, you may choose to  use examples which help the reader to know something about your upbringing and possibly your family life.
  • An effective college essay clearly represents your realistic academic potential and so it should facilitate the reader to understand what you value in yourself/ in life/ in academia/ in your experiences.
  • It should represent how you understand the world.  A little bit of introspection goes a long way in planning an effective college essay and helps you to clearly represent your ability to learn from life experiences.
  • An effective essay communicates  your ability to integrate what you have learned in school and life, as well.
  •  An effective college essay furnishes a clear idea of your adaptability;  reaction while under pressure;  and  self  worth
  • While your effective college essay never goes over the word count,  it must always start with a sharp captivating  paragraph which entices the reader to have to read it through until the end.
  • Finally, your effective college essay must clearly show .... between the lines... if you  will fit into your choice university.

  • Stay tuned for some great examples!

Weave Your College Essay Mission Statement

    Captivate your college admissions' audience!

A college essay is a carefully recounted series of narratives woven in a way that the college admission's officer understands something unique, thought provoking, and outstanding about the candidate and his/her academic potential.    We'ave Your College Essay assists the college applicant in presenting himself/herself in the best light possible.  In many cases, the essay is the only way for a college admission’s officer to feel connected to the student.  It is my firm belief that it would be unfair to judge any student on simple number calculations.  I have had many exceptional students throughout my years teaching who did not present themselves realistically in terms of simple test grades, yet when they put pen to paper, they were proudly able to represent their capabilities, understanding, as well as their ability to critically think and apply knowledge. This is the main goal of education on any level… facilitate the learner to make connections and apply knowledge.  Numbers cannot completely tell us that this connection has taken place or could take place. The essay is a chance for each candidate to make him/herself "come alive" to those reading it and to openly express who he/she is in addition to alluding to realistic capabilities.  The essay should not be a neutral factor in the college application process, many times it earns the candidate an advocate in the admission’s office.  It is not a resume, but a series of stories carefully "woven" in a way that it entices and illuminates the college personnel.

Imagine reading 250 trite resumes of potential candidates.. neutral factors which make the numbers ever more important.   Imagine an admission’s personnel drudging on and on through a myriad of these neutral narratives.. Finally, YOUR ESSAY appears on the admissions official's desk.  He/She starts to read, eyes glued to the page... goose bumps at just the right point... start with a bang and end with an open thought which seems to call the reader back to YOU over and over again...  This is what a college essay should be…. The most UNIQUE and positive representation of who you ARE as a student and why YOU will inspire and awe and give to the UNIVERSITY OF YOUR CHOICE as much as you will gain!

Please read on and see if you agree and would like to create a CAPTIVATING ESSAY as an addition to your application to university.
